How do you choose drumstick sizes?

Choosing the right drumstick size is a matter of personal preference, but there are a number of factors to consider for your style. Drum sticks are multi-faceted parts, so size changes in each part will make a difference in sound and playability. Consider each size-related aspect, and find your perfect combination.

1. Choose your thickness

   Generally, thinner sticks are flexible and easier on your arms, but they generate light sound, as well. Jazz players usually prefer lighter sticks. Medium sticks are common for rock musicians. For metal and hardcore drummers, the heaviest are the way to go.

2. Choose the taper

   The taper of a stick is how steeply it is cut from the thickest part of the stick to the tip. Longer tapers tend to feel more flexible, while shorter ones provide strength. The place the taper begins, the shoulder, affects weight distribution and balance.

3. Choose length

   The length of the stick has little effect on sound, but it will be one of the more noticeable differences in how sticks feel in your hands and navigating around the drum set. Choosing length is primarily a matter of personal taste, so try different sizes out, and see what works for you.

4. Choose tip shape

   There are a variety of shapes and sizes for tips, and each has its own effect on sound. Basically, larger, broader tips add thickness and presence, while thinner and plastic tips create brightness, especially when hitting cymbals.

5. Try out woods

   Wood type is not necessarily a size-related choice, but different woods or composites feel different, as well. The feel of the wood may affect how you choose a size.
