How do you choose the right dog crate size?

To choose a dog crate, measure the dog from nose to hindquarters and choose a crate that is slightly longer than the dog. The dog should be able to comfortably turn around, stand up and stretch out a little.

For growing puppies, it is best to estimate their adult size and buy a crate based on that. If it is too large, block off part of the crate to make the space smaller. This prevents the puppy from using one end of the crate to eliminate and helps with house training. Instead of measuring the dog, it's also possible to refer to the crate's manufacturer recommendations, which are usually based on weight. This method is not appropriate for breeds with long backs, such as basset hounds.
