What are church altars?

Church altars are elevated surfaces, usually at the front of the church where the sermon is delivered, that are used for the Eucharistic Sacrifice or communion. They are also used for personal prayer time.
Altars date back to before the second century, and they are considered a sacred area in a church. The altar is used for the Eucharistic Sacrifice, or communion, where it is believed the blood, body and spirit of Christ enters and cleanses Christians of their sins if they are asked to be forgiven. Christians also use the altar to pray and worship privately, or with family or clergy members. Many churches have multiple altars.
