Every two years, Brussels, Belgium hosts a massive flower carpet in front of the Grand Place, the city's central square. This biennial tradition began in the 1970s, and though the design changes each time, the floral carpet always heavily features begonias.
The carpet, which is about 80 feet wide by 250 feet long, consists of hundreds of thousands of flowers that are meticulously arranged to create an intricate pattern. Planning begins a year in advance, with details such as design and color combinations subject to careful consideration by Belgian officials. The flowers are inserted into the carpet pattern by a large force of volunteers who work quickly to assemble the finished product.
