What is a clap switch?

A clap switch is a device that plugs into a standard wall outlet and allows the user to turn devices on and off with a series of claps. Many clap switch models feature two plugs on the face of the unit that allow for clap operation of those modules.
First introduced in the 1980s and made popular through relentless television advertisements, the device was mainly marketed toward older individuals but struck success with the general population soon after launch. Known as the Clapper, the unit can operate two appliances, such as lamps, televisions and radios. Clap switches can be found at many home goods stores in addition to online retailers.
