In aromatherapy, the essential oil of clary sage is commonly used to relieve anxiety, fear, menstrual cramps and insomnia. Clary sage is known for its antibacterial, antispasmodic and sedative properties.
Derived from the flowers and leaves of Salvia sclarea, the essential oil of clary sage is also known as clary oil or muscatel sage. It contains the compounds l-linalyl acetate, linalool and nerol. In addition to its uses in aromatherapy, clary oil is used as a fixative in perfume production and to flavor wine, liquor and tea. Clary sage's name is derived from the Latin word for "clear" and dates back to the Middle Ages, when the seeds of the plant were used to treat tired eyes and blurred vision.
