Indian is the brand name of motorcycles made by the Indian Motocycle Manufacturing Company from 1901 to 1953. The firm was called Hendee Manufacturing Company prior to changing its name in 1928. The Scout and Chief models were introduced in the early 1920s and gained a reputation for reliability and performance. Aside from being commercially successful, both models were widely used by police departments. They were also used in limited numbers by the United States Army in World War II.
