What climate does an oak tree need?

Oaks grow well in southern climates in which soil is at least 36 inches deep. They can survive in dry areas, but they do not produce a lot of timber in these areas. Oaks grow well in full sunlight.
Oaks regenerate from acorns and stump sprouts. They do not produce many seeds compared to other tree species. Acorns decompose quickly if they become wet. White, swamp white and bur oak acorns begin to develop in the fall after they drop from the tree. Northern red, black and northern pin oak acorns begin to develop during the spring after they drop from the tree. Oaks can survive in low light when they first begin to grow, but they need more sunlight as they grow larger.
