What is cobalt sulfate?

Cobat sulfate, also known as cobaltous sulfate or cobalt(II) sulfate, is the divalent cobalt salt of sulfuric acid. Its chemical formula is CoSO4 and its molar mass is 154.996 grams per mole in the anhydrous form. It also exists as a monohydrate, a hexahydrate and a heptahydrate.

Cobalt sulfate is produced from the reaction of cobaltous oxide, hydroxide, carbonate or cobalt metal with sulfuric acid. It is used in the manufacturing of pigments, batteries, electroplating baths and as a chemical additive to animal foods and soils. Although cobalt is an essential chemical for many living beings, humans should not ingest more than a few milligrams per day. Cobalt salts have also been found to be carcinogenic.
