The Association of Information Technology Professionals oversees the Code of Ethics governing the conduct of American information technology professionals. The general tenets of the AITP Code of Ethics define an IT employee's professional obligations to his employer or educational institution, management, country, society and fellow association members.

The AITP Code of Ethics includes a Standards of Conduct section that outlines specific behaviors required of all IT professionals. Some examples of these behaviors are keeping professional knowledge up-to-date, accepting responsibility for work performed, being honest in professional relationships, protecting privacy and confidentiality, and not using professional knowledge for unauthorized personal gain.
