The code name for the allied invasion of France was Operation Overlord. Though the plan was scheduled to take effect some time in the spring of 1944, formal strategizing for this huge amphibious invasion began in 1943.
General Dwight D. Eisenhower was selected to command the invasion, and the site of Normandy was chosen as the invasion point in January of 1944. More than 150,000 soldiers were to land within a 60-mile area in the span of only 24 hours. D-Day, originally scheduled for June 5, 1944, was postponed one day due to bad weather, but by the end of June 6, the troops had all landed and had begun to secure the area. The tide of the war had turned.
