The term "ley lines" was coined by a landscape photographer named Alfred Watkins. He began to notice that important ancient sites seemed to be connected by straight lines to other similar nearby sites. Watkins believed that these historic sites were somehow used as navigational sources.

Watkins didn't believe that ley lines held any spiritual or magical properties. However, some New Age believers and other followers began to.

In 1969, John Michell wrote a book called "The View Over Atlantis." In this book, he attributed ley lines to feng sShui. This further perpetuated the idea that ley lines exist for spiritual reasons and is an idea that is still believed today.
