As of November 2015, India issues seven different coins in denominations of 10 paise, 20 paise, 25 paise, 50 paise, one rupee, two rupees and five rupees. These are defined as small coins for denominations of up to 50 paise and rupee coins for those of one rupee and above.
India gained independence in 1947 and introduced its first coinage in 1950, using rupees and annas. The country brought in a decimal system in 1957, with the rupee divided into 100 paise rather than 16 annas. India also has seven denominations of banknotes; five, ten, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 rupees.
