Benjamin Franklin never attended college or university. His formal education ended when he was 10 years old, after attending the Boston Latin School for two years. Franklin pursued self-education for the rest of his life and became a renowned scientist, inventor and political theorist.

At the age of 12, Franklin learned the printing trade from his brother, James. In 1728, Franklin founded his own newspaper, The Pennsylvania Gazette. Among Franklin's inventions are the Franklin stove, bifocal glasses and the lightning rod. Franklin served as the American envoy to France during the American Revolution. He signed both the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution.
