At room temperature, argon is a gas that is without odor and colorless. However, if argon is mixed with some mercury and excited by an electric current, it has a bluish glow. It also gives off a violet glow when a high voltage is applied to it.
Argon is a noble gas that belongs to group 18 on the periodic table. This element has an atomic weight of 39.948 grams per mole. It has a melting point of -308.83 degrees Fahrenheit. The atmosphere contains argon. Although it was believed that argon was unreactive, there is one compound called argon fluorohydride. Some applications of argon are for light bulbs, production of silicon crystals and welding.
