A colposcopy is a type of diagnostic test that allows a doctor to examine the vulva, vagina and cervix using a magnifying device called a colposcope, according to WebMD. The test is generally ordered following an abnormal Pap test.
A colposcopy is used to check for problems that may be causing abnormal Pap results, notes WebMD. It may also be used to check sores, genital warts or to follow up from abnormal observations from a previous exam or to look for precancerous changes to the cervix. During the exam, the doctor may perform a biopsy of the cervical canal to rule out cancer.
