A combination square is a common tool used for many purposes in metalworking, woodworking and masonry. Functions of the tool include determining the flatness of wood, measuring angles, gauging depth and finding the center of round items.

Combination squares include a blade with ruler marks and interchangeable heads. The most common head is referred to as the standard or square head and is used to check right angles and 45-degree angles. Combination squares are available in 6- and 12-inch sizes.

The tool is used in metalworking for multiple tasks involving the layout and setup of metal. For example, it is used in positioning large items in machine vices at the appropriate angle.
