The Hupa Indians subsisted mainly on salmon and acorns, along with greens, roots, berries and nuts. Besides fishing, the Hupa were also avid hunters, using dogs to track down deer and elk as well as smaller game like rabbits and birds.
In addition to roasting acorns above open fires, they were also prepared by grinding them into a powder, or flour, and then using them to make pancakes, bread and other pastries. The Hupa caught salmon and trout during the autumn and spring, and then smoke-dried what they didn't eat to preserve it for future meals.
