Headboards are found in dimensions to suit every size bed from twin to California king. Some common materials for headboards include wood and metal. There are also a variety of styles for headboards, including contemporary, eclectic, traditional, beach style and rustic, as well as farmhouse, Victorian and tropical.

Upholstery options include linen, velvet, faux leather or leather, cotton or polyester and silk or satin. In addition to a wide selection of fabrics, buyers may also choose from many colors, patterns and prints. Upholstery nails may be used as a part of the design or hidden underneath.

Bookcase or storage headboards are typically made from oak, pine or maple wood. Some bookcase headboards may have just one or two storage areas while some may have multiple storage areas all across the headboard.

Attached headboards fit into a bed frame made by the same manufacturer. They must have precise measurements to fit the bed properly, but they tend to be more secure than wall-mounted headboards. Wall-mounted headboards do not necessarily need to match the bed size, and they are frequently upholstered.
