Within two to four weeks of HIV infection, many people experience flu-like symptoms, such as fever, swollen glands, sore throat, fatigue, rash and headache. Fever is the most common symptom, according to AIDS.gov. Some people with HIV experience no symptoms for 10 years or more.
After the early infection stage, HIV enters a latency phase, during which patients typically experience no HIV-related symptoms, explains AIDS.gov. The latency phase lasts for an average of 10 years. Without treatment, the latency phase eventually transitions to AIDS, resulting in symptoms such as rapid weight loss, neurologic disorders, extreme exhaustion, diarrhea and skin sores.
