Some common mammals in the U.S. are deer, bears, elephants, lions and dogs. Bats, monkeys, whales and rodents are also considered mammals. Humans are of course another common mammal in the U.S.
To be considered a mammal, the animal must have a backbone with vertebrate and be warm-blooded. Mammals often regulate their own body temperature. The female of mammals produce milk for their young.
Mammals often have hair, and the majority of mammals give birth to live young. There are some exceptions to this, including the echidna and the platypus. While whales are not furry animals, they do have hair, making them mammals.
