Sodium bicarbonate is commonly known as baking soda. The scientific name is NaHCO3. Baking soda is an alkaline compound found in crystalline form in nature. It is ground into a fine powder and is used in cooking, cleaning and home remedies.
Baking soda can be used as a leavening agent for muffins, cakes, pancakes and other quick breads. Baking soda can be placed in refrigerators, freezers and other enclosed spaces to help absorb offensive odors. The pH level of baking soda allows it to dissolve some types of deposits and build-up. A half-teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in 4 ounces of water can be used as an antacid for most healthy people.
