Some common side effects of freezing warts include skin irritation and swelling, WebMD explains. There is a small chance for infection of the area. Signs of an infection include a fever of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, discharge of pus and red streaks in the area.

Cryotherapy is freezing a wart using a cold substance, generally liquid nitrogen. It's a common treatment for warts and is generally done in a doctor's office, according to WebMD. The application of the liquid nitrogen usually takes less than a minute.

The pain from the procedure usually lasts a couple of days and healing takes seven to 14 days, WebMD notes.
