Some common varieties of giant allium include Gladiator, Globemaster and Giant Onion. More than 700 varieties of allium exist, and the bulbs bloom at different times of the year.
The common name of allium is ornamental onion, although the plants don’t look anything like the vegetable that shares the name. The Giant Onion variety produces lilac-colored blooms that are up to 4 inches wide. The Gladiator and Globemaster varieties are some of the tallest and most dramatic alliums, sporting large, round, purple blooms on stems that grow up to 4 feet tall. Alliums are resistant to chipmunks, deer and rabbits, making them a beneficial addition to the garden.
