What are some common tests used to evaluate reading levels?

Two common reading assessment tests are the Developmental Reading Assessment and the Common Core State Standards Lexile. Both of these tests are administered in schools. The San Diego Quick Assessment and Scholastic's Book Wizard are popular among home-schoolers.

Many independent online reading assessment tests are also available, including Let's Go Learn and Emergent Reader EDGE. These tests assess phonemic awareness, alphabetic principles, phonics and fluency through a variety of methods. These tests are fairly simple and straightforward, asking the child to identify letters and words, read passages, and answer questions about the reading while the instructor notes miscues and incorrect responses.
