Common dental surgeries are root canal therapy, dental implants, tooth extraction and gum tissue graft surgery, according to WebMD, the American Association of Endodontists and Colgate. Root canal therapy removes infected pulp in the root of the tooth, says the American Association of Endodontists.

With dental implants, a post, often made of titanium, is inserted into the patient's jaw, says WebMD. The bone and post fuse together and create an anchor for a tooth made of porcelain or metal.

Tooth extraction is used to remove a damaged or diseased tooth, states Colgate. Gum tissue graft surgery is a treatment to save teeth that are in danger of being lost to gum disease, notes WebMD.
