Dimethyl sulfoxide, also known as DMSO, treats bladder inflammation, according to WebMD. The FDA has approved dimethyl sulfoxide as a treatment for the bladder condition interstitial cystitis. Washing the bladder with DMSO can reduce the pain associated with this condition.

Dimethyl sulfoxide comes in the form of an oral supplement, a topical cream or gel, and an intravenous drug. Some evidence suggests that dimethyl sulfoxide could be an effective treatment for skin damage due to chemotherapy, shingles and the pain resulting from it, inflammatory bladder disease, and a condition known as complex regional pain syndrome, reports WebMD. When used as a treatment for skin conditions or regional pain, patients apply dimethyl sulfoxide directly to the skin.
