Many dishes throughout the world feature poppy seeds as an ingredient, including many baked goods such as breads, muffins and cakes. Poppy seed bagels are popular in North America. Whole or ground poppy seeds appear often in salads, and pressing poppy seeds produces poppy seed oil.

In central and eastern European cuisine, a filling in many pastries consists of sugared ground poppy seeds added to pasta or boiled with milk. In Poland, people traditionally serve makowiec, a nut roll filled with poppy seed, during Christmas. In Indian cuisine, it is common to grind the seeds and combine them with coconut and spices to make korma.
