There are several French words and expressions that have made their way into common English usage, such as "adieu," "à la carte," "à la mode," "avant-garde" and "bon voyage." The frequent English usage of some of these words has caused their pronunciation to become more or less anglicized.

"Adieu" literally translates as "until God," and it serves as a farewell when the parties doubt any future encounters. "Bon Voyage" translates as "good trip," and also functions as an expression of farewell. "Avant-garde," or "before guard," is a way to designate the innovative, while "à la carte" is a way to request side orders. "A la mode" technically means "in fashion," but English speakers connect it with ice cream instead.
