Animals and insects, such as butterflies, carp, dragonflies and cranes are some commonly used symbols in Japan. Plants such as chrysanthemums, cherry blossoms, peonies and pine trees are also common symbols in the Japanese culture. People in Japan use these symbols in kimono designs, art, healing practices and celebrations.
The carp, also known as the koi fish, represents faithful marriage and good fortune. When painted in an arched upward motion with sprays of water, the carp symbolizes the virtues of a determined warrior. Japanese people associate plants with values such as longevity, good fortune and integrity, and they also use some plants, specifically chrysanthemums, for their healing properties.
