As of June 2015, Family Handyman, This Old House and Ana White offer online instructions for building bookcases. The book shelves at Family Handyman have a simple four-shelf design that a woodworker can complete in one day. Several photographs and a diagram illustrate the directions.

This Old House provides instructions for a large built-in bookcase. Completing it takes a moderate level of woodworking skill. The simple design requires veneer plywood and a circular saw. Solid-wood trim covers the plywood edges. Diagrams and photos are included in the instructions.

Ana White's site has plans for a rustic pine bookshelf. The finished height is just over 63 inches. The directions are accompanied by illustrations showing cutting, attaching and assembling.
