What is a conjugal visit?

Conjugal visits are private visits that prison inmates may have with spouses and extended family within prison walls. They are also known as extended family visits. Conjugal visits usually take place in apartment-like areas within the prison that provide the inmate and his visitor with privacy.

Not every inmate who was legally married before being incarcerated can have a conjugal visit. These visits are a privilege, and most inmates must follow strict rules and requirements. They are allowed because experts believe keeping family bonds intact may help inmates rehabilitate. Only six states allow conjugal visits: California, Connecticut, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York and Washington.
