Creatinine levels greater than 1.3 mg/dL are generally considered to be higher than normal. While the typical range is from 0.6 to 1.3 mg/dL, levels can vary across men and women of different age, according to Mayo Clinic.
Since the amount of creatinine increases with muscle mass, men tend to have higher levels than women. Creatinine levels can temporarily increase due to dehydration, low blood volumes, consumption of large amounts of meat and taking certain medications or creatine supplements. High creatinine levels may indicate the kidneys are not functioning well. In such instances, physicians often administer additional blood or urine tests to confirm the results, cites Mayo Clinic.
