Many of the controversies surrounding greyhound racing involve animal cruelty such as improper living conditions for the dogs, high risk of injuries and the killing of greyhounds. These factors make greyhound racing an inherently cruel activity.

Greyhounds are often housed in warehouse-style living conditions at the racetracks in cages so small the animals can barely move, the ASPCA reports. Injuries frequently occur on the race track, another animal rights group, PETA, claims. When a greyhound is injured or deemed unfit to race, they are often killed. For these reasons, greyhound racing is illegal in 39 states as of 2015.
