Copaxone is a medication used to treat patients with relapsing/remitting multiple sclerosis, according to WebMD. It contains glatiramer acetate which is a synthetic protein that prevents the immune system from attacking the nerves in the brain and spinal cord, therefore reducing the frequency of relapses.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration also approve this medication for use by patients who have had a first clinical episode and have MRI features that are consistent with multiple sclerosis, reports the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Copaxone is available in two different doses and must be injected under the skin as instructed by the doctor.
