What is the correct method for the proper disposal of batteries?

To dispose of lithium batteries or batteries of more than 9 volts properly, the placement of clear packing tape, electrical tape or masking tape on the terminals is required. The batteries can also be sandwiched between two layers of tape if they are flat button cell batteries. These batteries require transport to a qualified disposal site.
Batteries of less than 9 volts do not need the use of tape in their disposal. Taped batteries, upon discard, should go in a separate container than that of lower voltage and non-lithium batteries. Alkaline batteries need no special care in their disposal and can be disposed of in normal household refuse.
