Italy borders the Adriatic Sea on the west. Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina border the sea on the east. In the south, the Adriatic Sea is joined to the Ionian Sea via the Strait of Otranto.
The Adriatic Sea is about 500 miles long and 100 miles wide. Its maximum depth is 4,035 feet, although its average depth is 1,457 feet. The western coast is fairly straight and continuous, while the eastern coast is marked by over 1,000 islands. The resulting inlets create an intricate coastline. Although marine life exists in the Adriatic Sea, it is not plentiful due to low levels of nutrients.
