After first freeing Spain from French rule, Bolivar had to wrest control away from France in 1807 and then from Spain in 1813. He worked with Britain to gain control of Caracas, Venezuela, and most of South America. In 1821, the Gran Columbia was formed, consisting of what is now most of Venezuela, Colombia, Panama and Ecuador. In 1821, Bolivar became the Dictator of Peru.
