During World War II, the Allies fought against the Axis powers, which were made up of Germany, Japan and Italy. Other countries joined the Axis but did not commit as many soldiers to the battle or were simply too small to make an effect on the tide of the war. Some of these countries included Hungary, Romania and Thailand.
The Axis powers claimed their goal was to break Western influence and to defend the world from Communism. At the start of the war, the Axis took the upper-hand due to Europe's poor response to fascist regimes and America's isolation, but the tide was eventually turned, leaving the Allies the victors of the war.
