Vasco da Gama, a Portugese explorer, sailed to India. He landed in Calicut on May 20, 1498. He was the first person to reach India from Europe by sea, and charted the first ocean route between Asia and Europe. His discovery began an era of global trade and imperialism.
His journey from Lisbon, Portugal to Calicut, India was the longest naval voyage made up to that point in time. His discovery enabled Portugal to create a colonial empire in Asia, and he was made Governor of India in 1524. Da Gama was born around 1460 in Sines, Portugal and died of malaria in Kochi, India in 1524.
