The country with the largest population in the world is China, and as of July of 2014, the population was estimated to be 1,393,783,836. China's population accounts for 19.24 percent of the total world population.
The median age in China is 37.5 years with 54 percent of the population occupying urban areas of the nation. China has been experiencing steady population growth since 1955 when the population was about 83,273,883. In 1979, China implemented the one-child policy to help combat the high population growth, but the policy changed in 2013, allowing couples to have two children. India follows China as the second most-populated country and is expected to surpass China by 2025.
