What country has the largest recorded earthquake?

The largest recorded earthquake occurred in Chile in 1960. Measuring 9.5 on the Richter scale, it killed or injured 5,000 people, left 2 million homeless and damaged coasts along the Pacific Ocean. It may also have led to the eruption of the Puyehue volcano two days later.
Though this earthquake was originally reported as having a magnitude of 8.6, scientists have since learned that the model used for calculating earthquake magnitude greatly underestimates the size of large events. After updating the model and recalculating the data from previous earthquakes, the magnitude of this earthquake was adjusted upwards.
