Birmingham, Ala., is located in Jefferson County, the most populous county in the state. According to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, approximately 660,000 people were living within the county boundaries in 2013, comprising roughly 13.6 percent of the Alabama population.

Jefferson County was established by the Alabama Legislature in 1819. However, the county seat would not be moved to Birmingham until 1873, two years after the city’s founding. The Jefferson area is home to some of the most significant tourist attractions in Alabama, including the McWane Science Center, an educational facility that houses interactive displays, and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, which educates the public on human diversity and tolerance.
