Typical prerequisites for declaring a psychology major at an American university include successful completion of a low-level psychology course and a quantitative methods or statistics course. Exact requirements differ depending on the university.
At City University of New York, Hunter College, students must complete a 100-level psychology course with a grade of B or higher, along with three credits of university-level mathematics to obtain a psychology major, as of 2015. At Rutgers University, students must receive a grade of C or higher in a general psychology course, a quantitative methods or equivalent course, and a four-credit content course and lab combination. The University of Pittsburgh requires a C or higher in both an introductory psychology course and a statistics course. The student must also be enrolled in a research methods course.
