What is a cover letter?

Cover notes, commonly called cover letters, introduce an applicant to potential employers by highlighting experiences and skills. An effective cover letter also requests an opportunity for the applicant to meet the hiring manager face-to-face.

Cover letters create the first impression with employers; it is important to write one in the appropriate tone and format and that the content is relevant to the job. Not only does it reveal an applicant's accomplishments and experience as it relates to the job posting, but it also reveals his or her ability to communicate. Poorly written cover letters reflect a lack of skills most companies look for when hiring employees.
