What is a CPCU designation?

A CPCU (or Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter) designation is a credential earned by insurance professionals who complete a series of four foundation courses, one elective course and three courses in personal or commercial insurance. Eight national exams must be passed to receive the CPCU designation.

The program, which is administered by the Insurance Institute of America, focuses on ethics, insurance law, risk management and financial practices, and requires two to three years to complete. To participate in the CPCU program, students must provide proof of being engaged in insurance-related activities for 17.5 hours per week during any 24-month period during the five years leading up to entrance into the CPCU program. CPCUs must complete continuing education requirements in order to uphold the designation.
