Cranberries are native to North America. According to Ocean Spray, the berries are grown in five U.S. states: Massachusetts, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington.
Americans consume approximately 400 million pounds of cranberries annually, and 20 percent of cranberries harvested are consumed at Thanksgiving. Cranberries are perennials that grow in sandy bogs. Small air pockets inside cranberries make them bounce and float. Some people believe that the pilgrims served cranberries at the first Thanksgiving in Plymouth, Massachusetts, according to Teacher Vision. One cup of cranberries contains 24 percent of the recommended daily value of vitamin C and 18 percent of the recommended daily value of dietary fiber, says Dr. Axe.
