The international symbol for breast cancer, the pink ribbon, was created by Alexandra Penney and Evelyn Lauder. They originally designed a ribbon to distribute at Estee Lauder stores in New York. In 1992, the pink ribbon became the official symbol of National Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Alexandra Penney is an American artist, journalist, author and former editor-in-chief of "Self" magazine. She also worked at "Vogue" and for the "New York Times Magazine." Evelyn Lauder is the senior corporate vice president of Estee Lauder cosmetics. She is also a breast cancer survivor.
A pink and blue ribbon, created by Nancy Nick in 1996, is used to symbolize breast cancer in men.
