Where do crocodiles come from?

Crocodiles are found in tropical and subtropical areas in southern Florida, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, Africa, southeastern Asia, Australia and the Pacific Islands. They tend to live near wetlands, swamps and marshy areas. While most steer clear of humans, Nile and Australian crocodiles are often aggressive and may attack.
Of the 12 species of crocodiles, most are endangered because of hunting and habitat destruction. People illegally kill crocodiles to obtain meat, skin for leather and musk for perfume. Human developments encroach on the living areas of crocodiles and reduce their available land. In addition, as people make inroads into these habitats, the reptiles frequently end up as road kill.
