As of 2015, there is no cure for hepatitis B, but in many cases the infection disappears after a few months, and sometimes patients with chronic cases completely recover, states WebMD. A vaccine prevents the disease, which is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus, states Mayo Clinic.
A chronic hepatitis B infection is one that continues longer than six months. It increases a patient's risk of liver failure, cancer or permanent liver scars, called cirrhosis. Children and infants are more prone to having chronic hepatitis B infections than are adults, notes Mayo Clinic. Newborns and day care center workers are among those who should be vaccinated against the virus, according to WebMD.
